Over the summer and fall I was working on a TV show called "Running Wilde" on the Sands Point Preserve on Long Island. Beautiful grounds with a giant Gothic Pre-war Mansion and stables resembling a castle. However, the structures inside were hauntingly barren and in some areas severely dilapidated. What was once a symbol of wealth beyond imagination is now crumbling away. Then I went to Florida and was blown away by what a desolate suburban, strip mall, parking lot-far-as-the-eye-can-see shithole that place is. So all of this thinking about desolation and decline is interspersed with pictures of family and friends, who are a warm counterbalance to my gloomy default perspective. Thank god for them. LINK

The First Tour de France

Maurice Garin, winner of the first Tour de France in 1903, proudly displays his Tour-winning bike. Back then the Tour was a fixed gear race because nothing else much existed. It was grueling and insanely long (1500 miles) and was basically so exhausting to be damn near impossible to finish. Although Garin finished the race in 94 hours and 33 minutes, the following year his first place finish was taken away from him after he was discovered to have taken the train. The founder of the Tour de France, Henri Desgrange didn't want to allow freewheels when they were invented, but finally grudgingly caved. But when it came to the derailleur, he put his foot down. "I applaud this test, but still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by artifice of a derailleur? We are getting soft. Come on fellows. Let's say this test was a fine demonstration - for our grandparents! As for me, give me a fixed gear!"

That Hideous Strength

Another watercolor.

Indeed.

My pal Mike Nirenberg on the set of Running Wilde. Wikipedia says he's an Italian graffiti artist. But Wikipedia also said my friend Mike Nirenberg invented Fords, New Jersey. I can find no other information about BLU. His invisibility is kind of inspiring in the era of Facebook and the ugly pointless constant self promotion that comes with being an artist, street or gallery. (Shepard Fairey comes to mind.) Years ago I found a stop motion video of figures painted on walls, moving around a room, transforming, giving birth to insect-human hybrids and murdering each other. There was no sound, no author, nothing to trace it back to. Just this astonishing bit of work floating in space, umbilical cord detached. Then a year or two later my friends were buzzing about this new graffiti video. It was BLU! And the work was even more spectacular! Now he has a website where you can check out his videos and sketchbooks. His work is fresh and original and I think some of the most engaging stuff being made today. He just finished a new video about evolution that pushes his form to a whole new level by incorporating found objects and using a wider array of sites as canvases: bridges, beaches, oil silos. He manages to continue to inspire and amaze me while keeping off the radar. But anything that's worth doing is worth overdoing. You can almost smell the Coca-Cola commercial on the horizon. In the meantime, Go BLU!!

BIG BANG BIG BOOM - the new wall-painted animation by BLU from blu on Vimeo.

Phil Zimbardo

I love neuroscience. I just can't believe we don't know that much about how our minds work, why we think the way we do or what perceptions actually are. The human mind is still undiscovered territory because it's hard to apply the traditional standards of objective science to something that is so subjective. We can't peer behind the curtain to see what our minds are doing. But people have been studying the mind using the best scientific tools and approaches available for the last 40 years or so with fascinating results. (Did you know that when you feel the first impulse of an idea towards action, as in "I am going to reach down and take a sip of my drink.", your cortex became active microseconds before the conscious thought arrived? Basically, your brain knows what you are going to do before you do.) Anyway, while stumbling through books that I mostly have a hard time understanding I tripped over Phil Zimbardo, an amazing man. He is an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University, writer, thinker, philosopher and perpetual student of psychology and behavioral science. He became well known for conducting the 1976 Stanford Prison Experiment in which he divided his class of normal every day college students into prisoners and guards. It resulted in a dramatic scenario of abuse, torture and brainwashing. Students literally forgot they were in an experiment and no longer associated with their normal identities. "Our planned two-week investigation into the psychology of prison life had to be ended prematurely after only six days because of what the situation was doing to the college students who participated. In only a few days, our guards became sadistic and our prisoners became depressed and showed signs of extreme stress." One of his latest books is called "The Lucifer Effect" and deals with precisely evaluating the situations in which normal people do Evil things. The results are surprising and disturbing and backed up by a lot of hard scientific research. Yes, any one of us is capable of doing horrible things to another living being (even cute little puppies) given the slightest nudge within certain circumstances. But now he is studying and writing about one of my favorite topics, TIME and our perception of it. His idea is that everyone develops an orientation to interpreting time at an early age that sticks with an individual all his life. And, research shows, what that orientation is (past, present or future) goes a long way into predicting what kind of life a person might have. It even goes a long way in explaining why one country has a particular set of cultural values and traditions that another doesn't. Anyway, its all too much for me to explain here and he does a much better job at it so I will turn it over to him. Ladies and Gentlemen, Phil Zimbardo....

The first video is a short and wonderful animated synopsis of his studies on Time. If you like it, I really really really suggest listening to his the other two lectures. He is good speaker and very entertaining. Perfect for listening to while working. Enjoy!

(double click video to see full size)

New Photographs

After spending weeks doing what seemed like serving out some bizarre photography prison sentence, developing film, scanning, editing, retouching and uploading, a single phrase repeated in my head: "Why am I doing this?" I am not even a photographer. So why bother with all the labor intensive, archaic technology of chemicals and scanning? I still don't know. I tell myself all sorts of things (film is just better, I like negatives, the grain is cool, the pictures are richer). All of which is more or less salve for my numb butt and brain. Much more likely, I need to suffer in order to feel like I am doing something worth my time. It must be painful, repetitive, and the least efficient means to an end. The assignment was to make a life size bronze bust of Bill Pullman from ten years ago (think Independence Day). I had five days to complete it and a handful of jpgs. I built an armature, covered it with diamond mesh, then built up the figure with Magic Sculpt (an air dry clay), then painted it with bronze metal coating, sprayed it with antiquing patina, buffed it, and sealed it with lacquer. I had never done anything like this before so I thought it would be a good excuse to document it with a stop motion video. Even with no time for material tests, drawings, or models I think it turned out pretty good in the end. I just really hope Bill likes it okay. The last episode of the television series Gossip Girl featured one of my video works during a scene that took place at a "Bushwick Art Party"! OMJC! And now for my Oscar Speech. I would like to thank all the folks at Gossip Girl for their continued support of my work. Thanks Geoffe, Malchus, Christine, and Loren! It looked great. So thrilling to see Chuck, Little Jenny, and Nate framed in by a bunch of oil paint I moved around in my dirty little studio. The title of the piece is Radio Super and was a stop motion video of a painting I had done frame by frame. Can't help it. I just have to post my Raleigh Pro because I finally got the wheels rebuilt. It's feeling pretty complete and it is a joy to ride. In the 1970's if you raced, you rode a Raleigh Pro or a Schwinn Paramount. These bikes (and their respective riders I guess) won the Olympics for sprinting in 1970 and 1971. Built in England out of Reynolds 531 steel tubing, with Campagnolo drop outs and components, they were extremely well crafted, strong yet light, nimble, smooth, and responsive. There was a red white and blue version that predated the red, yellow and black color scheme which now seems to be more rare. I personally love how wonky and "70's" the lettering is and how the paint job looks like something out of the Communist Bloc. Mine is built up pretty much how it would have been in the 70's except without tubular rims. Instead I replaced them with classic low profile clinchers (a total pain in the ass to find by the way). It was pretty obnoxious as a teenager to have had him constantly prodding me to stand against this tree or that wall. Always angling for an odd perspective he might put the camera underneath my feet when I was crawling out of bed for school or sneak up on me and my friends who thought we were alone smoking in the woods. He had a darkroom in the house and when I was younger we made pinhole cameras together out of cardboard boxes of various shapes and sizes. My favorite was one we made out of a Copenhagen chewing tobacco can. It was fun to run outside, pull the tape off the pinhole, count off the exposure, put the tape back on, and run inside to throw the paper in the developer and watch the ghostly images appear. A kind of magic.

So now, years later, I am the obnoxious one. I invade the privacy of my friends by jamming my camera in their faces when we hang out. I walk around the streets shooting whatever interests me. Photography has always done a good job of keeping my eyes open, searching for relationships, composing the nonsense. It revitalizes one's surroundings, creates curiosity and over time reveals how much things have changed. If nothing else its a good excuse to go for a walk, breathe the air, feel the sunlight (or rain).

Either out of habit or maybe just a blind stubbornness I have always been partial to 35mm and almost always black and white film. I have been shooting with the Konica RF, Japan's answer to the Leica. I love this little camera. It is beautifully crafted and engineered, solid, discreet, quiet, and with incredibly sharp lenses. I have two lenses, a 28mm and a 50mm. I've started developing my own film. I am still making plenty of amateur mistakes, but getting better. I do find the imperfections and inconvenience of film as something that keeps me coming back to it. It is still magic to open up that developing tank and see what is in there.

Here are some of my most recent photos. I just started shooting again now that its warming up. Wondering around the neighborhood, going for bike rides. I hope they are interesting. I'll post more as they come. LINK

"Recovery" at Marketplace Gallery

So I finally got around to posting pics of the show. They aren't mind blowing, but I was sooo tired after driving up, hanging the show all night, sleeping for about 4 hours, hanging, dropping off the Uhaul, then meeting people shaking hands and trying to combine syllables into somewhat coherent sentences. But it was a great time and the turn out was unexpected (at least to me). Everyone I met was curious and engaged. Thanks to the Marketplace Gallery, Samson Contempasis and Albany for letting me be your guest. Thanks to Vania for picking up the camera for me! It had a growing positive response among teachers and classrooms until in some states it was banned because it was too "liberal". The film was written by Annie Leonard after spending ten years traveling the globe fighting for environmental causes. Glen Beck called it an "anti-capitalist tale that unfortunately has virtually no facts correct." Take a look and make up your own mind. The good news is, they are making more films! Be sure to watch the Story of Cap And Trade as well. Really looking forward to the Story of Bottled Water. (I have seen people literally cringe when I drink water from the tap.) The folks at Free Range are doing great work. Check out their website and if you're inspired drop a donation.

Track Bikes

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Specifically fixed gear bikes or track bikes, single speeds designed for racing on a velodrome. No brakes and no freewheel, the pedals move constantly with the direction of the wheel, like a unicycle, forward and backward. They have become pretty popular these days and in my neighborhood are something of a fashion accoutrement. Urban Outfitters sells them now in all sorts of matching colors. However, if you ride one, you know why. You have never been so intimately connected with your bike. You are the wheel. You slow down or stop by using the muscle power of your legs and by tearing your kneecaps apart in a skid. It is Pure Zen. I was told that fixed gears first arrived on the scene after being imported by Jamaicans who just built their bikes with plain ole cogs. Then it appeared on the bike messenger circuit. I don't know if this is true. But track racing has been around for a long time. I am not a bike messenger, nor do I ride with anyone. I don't belong to a group. I have no tattoos. I don't race or hang out in bike shops. I just love riding and commuting since about six years ago when my buddy Dylan helped me put together my first Franken-bike, a white and purple metallic 1980's Peugot stripped down to nothing. I burned out the rear hub twice and broke two spokes in that first year of riding. It's been magic ever since. Anyway, there are lots and lots of blogs out there and I could go on forever about all my favorite bikes and websites. (And I will.) But this time I just want to mention a couple things to get started.

Local NYC bike shop Bike Works. This place is great. It's kinda small and hard to find. It doesn't have endless racks of brand new polished Fuji's lining the walls. It doesn't have a giant backroom full of u-locks, saddlebags and piles of spandex jumpsuits. But the guy who runs the place knows more about vintage bikes than anyone around. He stocks both classic and new school components. His staff is super nice and helpful. And most importantly they do FANTASTIC work. They can custom build wheels in ways no other shop can. Their repairs are rock solid. They have all the cool old cloth bar tapes in every color. And they just plain kick ass. Check out their bike archive. Bikes are beautiful. Bikes are art. And don't miss their saddle archive. To top it off they have my 1976 Zeus in there too!

I'll finish this with a couple videos by Macaframa. These guys I think are based in San Fransisco, but include riders from all over. I saw these videos a couple years ago and was delighted by the tricks and production value. Get a glimpse into what the youngsters are up to!

Albrecht Durer

I first discovered the 13th Century German printmaker and painter Albrecht Durer when I was working at Alabaster Bookshop, a small used and rare bookstore on 4th Avenue. I found an old copy of "The Just Shaping of Letters" and was fascinated by his analytical and mathematical approach to lettering. I love lettering and signage, probably because I grew up watching my dad carve signs in his wood shop. The form of letters as objects separated from language has always interested me. (There is a contemporary art movement called INI that focuses on language and lettering as it's primary form. Be sure to check out their Revolutionist Guide.) I found a book of Durer's woodcuts and I have returned to it year after year. His line is so peculiar. His landscapes are so full, figures bulging and expressive, trees fleshlike, the ground breathing, the air serpentine. Here are just a handful of his woodcuts and two self portraits, but there is much more where these came from. Enjoy!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; It was covered up by the Pentagon, Justice Department, and ultimately the White House. Obama said he was going to close Guantanamo, but he hasn't and now is culpable of the same crimes as the Bush Administration. I find this all unbearably sad and disappointing. I recommend reading the article and making your own mind up about it. We should be aware of what our elected officials are doing in "our" name. Read it here.

Sketchbook 2009

A mannequin and her fencing glove.

Jan Švankmajer

Another stop motion wizard is Jan Švankmajer, a Czech surrealist who has influenced The Brothers Quay, Tim Burton, and Terry Gilliam among others. Famous for his highly developed stop motion technique and his dark yet witty sensibility utilizing housewares, food, and clay, Švankmajer is still producing work, recently winning the 2009 Crystal Globe Award. He has made versions of Punch And Judy, Faust, and Alice In Wonderland as well as a prolific list of short films. You can purchase a compendium but I have posted a few of my favorite shorts. Most were dead ends. But one idea I had was to take a photograph I had previously shot and paint directly over the top of it in successive layers, while retaining the original image as a sort of architecture or template. I tried it out several times but the effect seemed to fall flat and I thought came off a little boring. But now, a few years later, they renew my interest. I still think I could have taken it further.

Studio Journal 2010

Empty lipstick smeared wine glasses. As a child he saw King Kong and it changed him forever. He began making his own stop motion animations in his garage as a teen and went on to invent his own process that paved the way in special effects for film. He created many famous monsters as well as becoming life long friends with author Ray Bradbury. I grew up watching his movies, Clash of The Titans, and The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and they captured my imagination then as they do today. (To my disappointment, they are re-making Clash of the Titans for the new generation of CG-o-philes.) Harryhausen created his own form of special effects by drawing beautifully detailed story boards, sculpting the creatures, projecting the pre-shot footage onto a screen and millimeter by millimeter syncing up his creatures, one frame at a time, to the actors. He did ALL this work by himself in his studio without assistance. If you aren't familiar with his work I suggest watching the following compiled video of his monsters and then treat yourself to his famous skeleton sequence from Jason and the Argonauts. His website has a complete filmography, biography and all sorts of cool factoids. Enjoy!

Alexandre Alexeieff

Alexandre Alexeieff is a Russian artist and animator who invented the "pinscreen", as well as living an extremely fascinating life. It is a panel with thousands of holes and pointed pins that get pushed through them. As the length of the pins emerge, a shadow is cast. By controlling the pattern of pins one can create shape, line and value. Each frame of the board is shot on film and then erased as the animation progresses. Absolutely stunning animation and so inefficient and labor intensive by today's standards that it seems an almost insane undertaking. You can see a (long and a little boring) video of the actual pinscreen here if you are as curious as I was. A situation in which the artist is never visible, only the residue of his actions. I had just returned from Mexico where I was drawing lots of faces and masks, doing watercolors of the streets, so the content of the work leans in this direction with a series of self portraits and a large painting of mummies. I began sculpting masks for the first time. Many of these paintings have since been destroyed or painted over, but they led to a following series of Military Portraits. After retouching and compiling the video I was never quite satisfied with the result so I put it in a folder on my hard drive and moved on without showing it to anyone but close friends. I haven't done any stop motion since but I still find this idea engaging and might come around to it again.

Sketchbook 2009

Last summer in Astoria Oregon, on a beautiful warm sunny afternoon I sat outside the Colombian Theater and drank many beers with old friends. I wanted to provide a little space outside of Facebook and my website for a more formal exploration of the things that interest me visually, conceptually, and philosophically. Not so much an online journal as an archive for my studio practice, a virtual wall of pin ups, collages, old sketches, thoughts, meandering ideas, inspirations, and questions. I thought it would be nice to make this usually hidden part of art making visible to a wider audience and to allow participation. I envision this Blog as a sort of ongoing fragmented poem, imperfect, changing as my ideas about it develop and grow, eventually taking on a life of its own. So welcome! Please feel free to add any comments, links, suggestions as I stumble along.
